Chapter Twenty-Four

Laura

Laura followed Craig through the custody suite as they moved to one of the back offices. Her stomach was churning. Something wasn’t right. She could taste it in the air. She gripped his arm.

“Spill right now,” she blasted. Craig looked to the floor. “You know that woman.” Craig’s face looked like he was chewing on a wasp.

“Don’t worry about it.” He said and tried to move away. Laura pulled him harder.

“How do you know her?”

“I said forget about it, ma’am.”

“Fuck that ma’am shit,” she bit. “If we are going to go in there and go to war with a possible murderer, then I need to know if you’re hiding something. He is some kind of street rat, so if you know him or any of his clientele, then you need to tell me right now because I need to be fully prepared for anything that will come out of his mouth.” Craig looked up to the ceiling, trying to find the answers. “Look,” Laura said more coolly. “Whatever it is, you need to tell me, or I can’t have you in there with me.” Craig squirmed in his skin. He let out a long exhale.

“It was about a year ago,” he said. “My ex-wife and I were separating.” Laura didn’t like where this was going. “I hadn’t slept in the same bed for months. I went out of town and found a girl on a street corner. She gave me a blowjob. I felt terrible for it.”

“You used a prostitute?” She said, the words like vomit in her mouth. “You went and gave someone money to touch your dick and then went home to your wife?”

“Our marriage was over,” he bit, eyes filled with fire. “We hardly spoke. It was like living with a ghost. Do you know what it feels like to love someone so much, and they don’t even want to touch you? Do you know what it’s like to see who a person really is and not the thing they pretended to be?”

Laura felt a stab in her heart. She knew all too well what that felt like.

“It was like living with a ghost,” he continued. “Seeing the death of a person right in front of your eyes even though they’re still living.” She could hear the rawness in his voice. He looked away, eyeing the walls like he wanted to run through them.

“There’s more, isn’t there?” Craig pursed his lips, then nodded.

“My badge fell out of my pocket, and she saw my name and where I work. So fucking stupid. She took my wallet and ran out into the night. She knew I wasn’t going to say anything. After that, I packed my stuff and left and moved back in with my mother. One night, I got drunk and broke down. Tried tying a noose around my neck when my mum came home and talked me out of it. I told her everything.” Craig spoke vacantly like he was speaking about someone else. Like he was recalling the terrible scene in a movie or a book he had consumed.
